Johnny Dowd is a singer-songwriter born in Texas and now based in Ithaca. At age 50, he released his debut record WRONG SIDE OF MEMPHIS. Recalling something Mississippi Records or Numero Group dug up, it’s a slab of outsider spartan murder ballads with gloomy Nick Cave-esque overtones — a cross between Tom Waits and Sonic Youth. He’s toured all over the US and Europe, opening for Sonic Youth, Stereolab, the Mekons, etc.
